Christian Wood inks 2-year pact with Lakers

Free agent big man Christian Wood has agreed to a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to multiple reports, and the Lakers made it official Wednesday night.

The second season of this contract includes a player option, meaning Wood has the option to re-enter free agency next summer after not receiving a large free agent contract this year.

Shortly after the news of signing with the Lakers broke, Wood tweeted, "It's always been my dream to be a Laker."

Wood will turn 28 shortly before training camp. Born in Long Beach, he attended high school in the Los Angeles area before traveling to two prep schools and eventually starting his career at UNLV.

Wood made 67 appearances for the Dallas Mavericks this season, averaging 16.6 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-10 forward/center shot 51.5 percent from the field and 36.7 percent from three-point range last season.

Over his seven-year career, Wood has played for eight different teams, averaging 14.8 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.

He averaged a career-high 21.0 points per game in Houston during the 2020-21 season. Wood can play small-ball center while pulling opposing defenses apart with his 3-point shooting, but he can be a bit of a challenge on the defensive end at times.

The Lakers reached the Western Conference Finals this summer under LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and Wood is the fifth veteran acquired by the Lakers. The Lakers also signed 7-foot center Jaxon Hayes, forward Taurian Prince, point guard Gabe Vincent and swingman Cam Reddish, while retaining free agents D'Angelo Russell, Austin Reeves and Rui Hachimura.

The Lakers lacked a true backup center after Mo Bamba's injury last season, and the additions of Hayes and Wood are expected to ease the physicality of Davis at center.
